Who Are You Watching?

Sermon Notes

Watch means to look at something carefully or closely, to be vigilant or alert, to keep a lookout for something that might appear or happen, and to look out for somebody. There are two types of people: the type that watches for people that don't make it, and the type that watches for people that makes it. Now the question is which type are you?

Matthew 26:36-38 Then cometh Jesus with them unto a place called Gethsemane, and saith unto the disciples, Sit ye here, while I go and pray yonder. And he took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful and very heavy. Then saith he unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: tarry ye here, and watch with me

In other words, watch me or for me. Jesus was about to approach physical pain, because of the separation from the Father. A physical death, for our sins of the world. The divine course was set, but He, in His human nature, still struggled because of the experiences He had. He could relate to our suffering. Prayer gave Him the strength to obey. Not keeping our eyes on Jesus we will lose our strength and fall.

Matthew 26:39 And he went a little further, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt (Isaiah.51:17 wrath).

Jesus was not rebelling against his father's will when he asked that the cup of suffering and separation be taken away, yet I want your will not mine. His prayer reveals to us his terrible suffering. His pain was worse than death because he paid for all sin by being separated from God. In times of suffering, we sometimes wish we knew the future, or we wish we could understand the reason for our pain or suffering. Jesus knew what lay ahead of Him and He knew the reason. What does it take to be able to say, I want your will to be done? It takes prayer and firm trust in God's plan, every step of the way. You see Jesus knew who he was watching and that's what we must know, who we are watching.

.

Matthew 26:40-41 And he cometh unto the disciples, and findeth them asleep, and saith unto Peter, What, could ye not watch with me one hour? Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.

The two types of people.
