Delight Thyself
Sermon Notes
Delight means to have great joy or pleasure in someone or something. Such as the delight of having children, to have joy in. Another delight is having a spouse, to have pleasure in. Christians should have joy and pleasure in fellowshipping with one another. Paul said in Philippians 4:4 rejoice in the Lord always, and again I say, rejoice.
Psalm 37:4 Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart
Here David is calling people to take delight in the Lord and to commit everything they have and do to Him. The Lord that is. But how do we do this? To delight in someone means to experience great pleasure and joy in his or her presence. This happens when we know that person well. How well do you know God? We delight ourselves in Him, the Lord, we must know him better. Knowledge of God's great love for us will give us joy in His presence.
Psalm 37:5 Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.
When there is close fellowship with God, a person's desire and his heart will match God's will and purpose, Remember the lesson about prayer, your prayer should be your will submitted to God's will. Matthew 6:33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. To commit ourselves to the Lord means entrusting everything, our lives, families, jobs, and possessions to his control and guidance.
Conclusion: We should believe that he can care for us better than we can ourselves. We should be willing to wait patiently for him to work out what is best for us.
